The Precision Engineered Rag CutterThe Southport Rag Cutting machine is primarily used for the cutting of fabric for the recycled cloth trade. Our sophisticated design has resulted in a safe, quiet and efficient machine. All components are locally supplied or manufactured by our company, Southport Engineering. Precision engineering techniques and quality materials are used to produce a high quality and reliable machine, setting us apart from other cheaper imitations that are being marketed. The designer, Robert Waters of Southport Engineering, has 40 years' experience in manufacturing many types of special purpose machinery, including industrial cutting machines for various materials. 
The Southport Rag Cutter (version 6) is designed to be used on any table at a convenient height for the operator to either stand or sit. Safety during operation is achieved by the blade being shrouded by the rigid exterior, with the fabric being inserted via a 7mm (1/4") slot, thus preventing the operator from coming into contact with the blade.

The blade is 230mm (9-1/2") in diameter, manufactured from hardened tool steel, thus giving long life between sharpening, and should last for many years before needing replacement. The blade is sharpened by sliding the sharpener provided through the 7mm slot (procedure is illustrated below) without removing the blade or guards. This system of sharpening is far more efficient and safer than the traditional method using spinning abrasive wheels, and only requires weekly attention. 
The blade is directly driven from a sealed .25 KW (1/3 HP) electric motor spinning at 2800 rpm, which provides an effortless cutting function. The Southport Rag Cutter is of very low maintenance, as its blade is directly driven off the motor and does not use belts and pulleys. The machine is computer cut from 6mm and 10mm commercial grade aluminium plate, and finished in silver polyester powder-coating. The Southport Rag Cutter requires no maintenance except the occasional dusting externally. The whole unit weighs only 10kg (22 lbs approx.), and can be mailed through regular postage services, thus reducing freight costs.
